On Friday, September 14th, from 6:30PM – 8:30PM, we’ll explore and discover a vibrant, colorful and original gallery of abstract designs from mixed-media painter and artist, Toni Martin. Show title: PRIM – SYM
“It is highly frustrating when I realize that my brain is lacking the necessary verbal tools needed to convey to other people what it is I am thinking. Sometimes the only way I can communicate is through paint, shapes and form. I feel I am trapped in my mind, and have developed a sign language through art to express myself and feel a connection.
I create works of art by using expressive gestures through fluid movement and precise pigment placement, which helps communicate my own emotional vulnerabilities. My vulnerability on many planes allows me to create a sense of empathy shared with the audience. Through immersing myself in a state of flow my sense of shapes, colors and balance develop into an abstract unspoken language, ultimately allowing viewers to go on an emotional journey.
I have a connection with Shelton because they use abstract and artistic methods of teaching. I myself being learning different… respect what they do to help guide the children of our future, they make it possible for many children to feel like they belong and can absolutely be successful. It makes me happy to help.” -Toni
PRIM – SYM:
Standing for Primordial symmetry. The inspiration was derived from Martins fascination with the concept of “patterns in nature”, which were studied by early Greek philosophers. Many shapes such as a square or cube are a rare superior find in nature. Martin wanted to blur the idea of naturally occurring primordial symmetry or how we can mimic a tessellation and how it is developed or depicted by giving it life through different mediums. The geometric shape represents each cube being its own entity housing what looks like a pattern that can only exist by the touch between specific mediums that ultimately take on a life of their own. To Martin each cube is proof that we can create fractal worlds by facilitating the birth.
